“changing minds, changing lives”
STUDYING THE WORLD IN CAPE TOWN
Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a young person’s career. Cape Town, a city rich in history and inspirational natural settings, is one of the world’s great study abroad destinations.
O’Connell Shepherd is a specialist academic services provider that meets the needs of study abroad students, sending schools, and third party organizations in Cape Town. Our niche approach focuses on “the missing piece of the puzzle” in local study abroad: the design and delivery of high quality academic courses.
We offer semester-long courses timed to coincide with the US academic calendar. We also offer short courses and customized programs, timed to coincide with optimum travel opportunities. All of our courses are HEQF compliant, and are offered at the equivalent of 2000- and 3000-level courses at the University of Cape Town.
By partnering with your organization, we shift teaching in-house, taking the risk and uncertainty out of the study abroad experience.
"Nothing substitutes for academic track record"
THINKING ALLOWED - OUR BUSINESS MODEL IS SIMPLICITY ITSELF.
Nothing substitutes for academic track record.
The integrity and reputation of our business is built around our CVs. We are global scholars with insider knowledge of US and South African higher education, and over 16 years experience of study abroad in Cape Town.
Nick Shepherd has been a Mandela Fellow at Harvard University, a Visiting Associate Professor at Brown University, and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Colgate University. He has been Centre Director in Cape Town for the University of California’s Education Abroad Program, and is currently Academic Director of CIEE Cape Town.
Siona O’Connell is a BIARI (Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) alumnus, award-winning scholar, curator and film-maker, and is one of a small number of black women to head a research institute in South Africa.
WE HAVE TWO GENERAL MODELS OF OPERATING.
In the first, we partner with established third party study abroad service providers in Cape Town, to take care of their in-house teaching needs. We offer semester-long courses that reproduce the best of UCT’s courses, under the direct control of our partners. Our partners enjoy the best of both worlds: total control every step of the way without the cost of setting up a parallel operation AND the knowledge that their students are encountering the very best of local scholarship and cultural production.
In the second model, we partner directly with sending institutions to offer short courses and customized programs. We work with faculty at sending schools to offer a one-stop academic service: curriculum design and delivery, fieldwork opportunities, service learning, guest lectures, and internships. We also offer a research facilitation service and local introductions for accompanying faculty. If required, we reproduce the functions of accompanying faculty using local faculty. Why pay for services in dollars, when we offer the equivalent services costed in rands?
